Backups: the minimum you should have

Losing important data is a nightmare that can be avoided. We explain the minimum backups you should have.

The 3-2-1 rule

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different storage types
  • 1 copy off-site

For individuals

At minimum you need: - External hard drive copy (weekly) - Cloud copy (Google Drive, Dropbox...)

For businesses

In addition to the above: - Automatic daily backups - Database backups - Email backups - Documented recovery plan

What to backup

  • Work documents
  • Personal photos and videos
  • Invoices and tax documentation
  • Customer databases
  • Important configurations

Common mistakes

❌ Backing up once and forgetting ❌ Having all copies in the same place ❌ Never testing if backups work ❌ Backing up to an old hard drive that may fail

Automate

Manual backups are forgotten. Set up automatic backups and stop worrying.
